MMC19 to Showcase Alumni Success
In 2019, Boyd has served as an Investigative Producer for WSB-TV for over five years. She is the one presenting what she has learned to a new group of Georgia State students following in her footsteps.
Seven years ago, I was a student learning from the pros at the first MMC, so this experience has truly come full circle for me. Conferences like this were the foundation of my career, so it’s an honor to be asked to participate.
Boyd is among several speakers featured in the sixth edition of the now biannual Modern Media Conference. The event kicks off on October 10 and provides a departure from past formats. Rather than playing out over two days in the same location, MMC19 will span three days, two weeks and two locations.
The event kicks off on October 10 on the Decatur Campus. The office of Student Life and Georgia State LIFT are collaborating to present a student-run live talk show with guests from Atlanta-area film, media, and businesses. This event will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fred Blankenship will begin the event as the featured speaker.
On Friday, October 11, the event moves to Student Center West on the Atlanta campus. Sessions will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will conclude on Thursday, October 17 with the Spotlight Featured Speakers Series, running from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Student Center ballroom on the Atlanta campus.
This year’s edition will include speakers from CNN, GPB, WABE and members from all four of Atlanta’s major network affiliates. More importantly, it will serve as a showcase for how Student Media has to success. Not only are several alumni featured, seven speakers are graduates from the past six years.
We made a point not only to showcase graduates’ success turning their time in Student Media into a career, we wanted to showcase just how many media outlets they are working for. Between three sessions on Friday, we have seven alumni representing seven different outlets.
~ Bryce McNeil, Director of Student Media
Perimeter’s kickoff of the conference is designed to be an integrated student learning program which provides students with “hands on” college to career experiential learning opportunities. Before the conference, Perimeter College students will participate in a one-hour production studio workshop to learn and assign their duties for the event. Students will learn about the different equipment, roles, and understand the production from beginning to end. Students are expected to fulfill the appropriate roles with guidance from the hosts, faculty, and production company.
The Perimeter College Modern Media Conference is designed to be an integrated student learning program which provides students with actual College to Career experiential learning opportunities.
~Perry Culverson, Assistant Director for Student Life at Perimeter College (Decatur & Newton)
We must be creative in our approach of College to Career outcomes by creating opportunities while students are on campus that provide them with real hands-on experience before their Junior and Senior year.
~Dr. Pia Scott, Manager of College to Career Programs, GSU LIFT.
